Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, a political analyst and Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to appoint individuals who are not politically exposed to key positions in order to ensure a free and fair election.
In an interview with Alfred Ocansey on Ghana Tonight on October 10, Dr. Otchere stated, “We need people who are not politically exposed, and that is the number one factor and the only thing that would ensure that there is that kind of confidence in the EC.”
He highlighted that public trust in the EC is essential, and appointing individuals with political affiliations, even if well-meaning, could raise suspicions.
“If you have those who are politically tainted, even if in your genuineness of your heart, they would still have to look at it from a political angle,” he explained.
Dr. Otchere’s comments underscore the importance of neutrality in the election process to build public confidence and trust in the EC’s ability to deliver credible results.
